Jenn Swagar

Jenn Swagar came out of the Crescent Heights high school program to burst on the provincial scene as part of the gold-medal winning U18 Alberta team at the National Championships in 1991. Jenn played five productive years for the UC Dinos between 1991-1996, captaining the team in her 5th year and winning the Dr. Dennis Kadatz award for the hardest working Dino athlete. She also continued representing Alberta at the Canadian level in both indoor and outdoor hockey over the course of the past 17 seasons, most recently winning gold at the 2007 Senior Championships and the 2008 Indoor Senior Championships.

Jenn moved into coaching very early, starting in 1993 with her high school alum. She often acted as a playing coach on her teams, and has coached Team Alberta at the U16, U18, U21 and Senior levels. She is a certified Level 3 coach, and took over the reins as the Head Coach of the University of Calgary Dinos program in 2007. Her in rookie season she was recognized as the Canada West Coach of the Year, and led the Dinos to their most successful season in almost a decade in 2008.

Keely Dunn

Keely Dunn is an alumnus of the Henry Wise Wood high school program, winning the Most Improved Player award in 1989. She also played 13 seasons representing Alberta from the U16 to Senior age levels. She also played for the Dinos between 1991-1996, and spent several seasons coaching at Henry Wise Wood and Western Canada as well as volunteering time with junior programs in the city. She and Jenn have played for Phoenix Black for the past 20 years, and have played on various teams in the city’s men’s league for the same amount of time.

In 2000, Keely retired from elite-level hockey as a player to pick up the whistle and quickly made a name for herself as one of Canada’s top umpires, being appointed to the Senior National tournament in her very first season. Her first opportunity to go abroad came shortly after and where she earned her FIH badge in 2003. She was promoted to the Promising List in 2006, placing her in the top 50 female umpires in the world. She has spent the past 3 seasons umpiring in the England’s prestigious National League, working her way up to the women’s Premier Panel and the men’s B Panel as well as umpiring dozens of British University league matches and the women’s BUCS final twice. She has over 70 international matches to her credit, and contributes to the umpiring community in Canada through clinics, umpire coaching and mentorship.

Keely is also a prolific writer on umpiring, hockey and other topics as a prominent poster on the Field Hockey Forum, an international blogger on the EuroHockey League website, webmaster for the Dinos Field Hockey Club and on her own blog.
